Synopsis:

This course is provided by the QLD Health Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capability State-wide Team.

The aim of the program is to provide QLD Health participants with learning opportunities to develop a foundational phase of cultural awareness. Cultural awareness is defined as "the ability to recognise and understand cultural differences and using this knowledge to change individual practices and behaviours when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, their communities and our employees".

On completion of the foundation phase, it is anticipated that employees will be able to demonstrate a basic level of cultural awareness. This is demonstrated by knowledge of:

  • the uniqueness and diversity that exists between and within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures including cultural  values, beliefs and practices
  • the historical and social factors that contribute to current health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • effective communication and engagement strategies
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce and external agencies
  • development opportunities to building individual cultural capability.

On completion of the this introductory program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.
